Following the launch of the revitalized Carling Black Label Cup, champion fans were given more power, as they were tasked with deciding which four Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams they would like to participate in this year’s Cup game.
After several weeks of voting and changes in votes, the final four teams were revealed on Monday, 03 October.
The first phase of the campaign saw just under 1,5 million votes from fans all 16 PSL teams, that were verified by SNG Grant Thornton.
Kaizer Chiefs led the votes at 490 376 votes while Orlando Pirates followed with 354 472 votes. Although Mamelodi Sundowns remained in the 3rd position from the onset, having secured 171 717 votes, 4th placed AmaZulu FC was inches away with 144 829 votes. Having led the votes for some time, Swallows FC eventually missed the final spot by 32 571 votes as they scored themselves 112 258 votes.
Hailing from Tshwane and Ethekwini, both Masandawana and Usuthu bring a twist to the traditional Soweto Derby that fans of the Carling Black Label Cup have become accustomed to over the past decade.
“We would like to send a Champion shout-out to the fans of all 16 PSL teams, as the participation in this year’s Cup has been great. We responded to the voices of all football fans, and they in turn responded with their support. We look forward to the next part of this exciting Champion Coach journey, where the fans will select their starting line-up and then the team Captain which we know has been a fan-favourite since it was introduced,” said Carling Black Label Brand Director, Arne Rust.
A lucky fan of any of the 16 PSL teams, still stands the chance of winning a R100 000 cash prize for voting. To enter, football fans over the age of 18 can purchase a selected Carling Black Label beer and dial *120*660*unique code#; and select their starting line-up. Entry is 20c per 20 seconds on USSD and free for Vodacom users.
