Lascelles’ last-gasp header earns a point for Newcastle

Jamaal Lascelles struck with the last attack of the match as Newcastle United grabbed a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

The defences were on top for the vast majority of a hard-fought match, but there was a dramatic finale.

Newcastle nearly took the lead on 83 minutes as substitute Jacob Murphy hit the crossbar, and their agony was compounded when they conceded an unfortunate goal just three minutes later.

A cross from Matt Targett was met by Ollie Watkins, whose header hit the knee of defender Ciaran Clark and deflected in off the underside of the crossbar.

But Newcastle refused to give up and, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Lascelles got on the end of a Murphy cross to powerfully head past Emiliano Martinez.

Newcastle remain 16th, now with 28 points, moving two points clear of the relegation zone, while Villa are ninth on 41 points.
