Philippe Coutinho was the pick of Aston Villa’s performers as they overwhelmed Southampton 4-0 at Villa Park.
Ollie Watkins put Villa ahead on nine minutes with a turn and finish inside the area for his second goal in as many matches.
Che Adams headed over for Southampton, who were grateful to Fraser Forster for keeping out efforts from Watkins and Coutinho.
But the Saints goalkeeper could not prevent Douglas Luiz from doubling Villa’s lead shortly before half-time following Coutinho’s corner.
Coutinho’s performance was rewarded with a goal on 52 minutes when he slotted in a pass from Danny Ings.
Ings completed the scoring against his former side two minutes later, turning in Matty Cash’s cross.
Villa climb to 11th with 33 points, two points and two places below Southampton, having played one match fewer.
