The two sides exchanged shy chances in the opening half an hour with Ahmad Sariweh testing the Muharraq goalkeeper Sayed Jaafar with a powerful effort from close range and Ismail Abdullatif responding in kind.
Mohammad Al Daoud thought he had found the back of the net for Al Salt in the 39th minute as he rifled a long-range strike that beat goalkeeper Sayed Jafar, but the Al Salt midfielder watched his shot cannon off the upright and behind for a goal kick.
Two minutes later, the deadlock was broken but it was Muharraq who took the lead after a quick break saw the ball fed to Waleed Al Hayam who advanced down the left and crossed for Abdullatif (pictured below) who kept his composure to round the goalkeeper and slot home his side’s opener.
Muharraq could have doubled their lead nine minutes into the second half after Jhonnattann Benites curled a shot from inside the box that beat the goalkeeper but bounced off the post and fell for Abdullatif who applied the finish into the back of the net but was in an offside position.
Al Salt came close to equalising at the hour-mark as Obieda Al Samrieh whipped a cross from the right flank for Mahmoud Al Mardi who moved into space at the near post and guided a diving header towards goal but was denied by Jafar.
Muharraq face Palestine’s Balata Center in their next game on Monday while Al Salt play Lebanon’s Al Ansar in their Matchday Two fixture.
