Both sides had been eliminated prior to their encounter at Central Republican Stadium, with Uzbekistan’s FC Nasaf winning the group after beating Turkmenistan’s Altyn Asyr FC earlier in the day.
An early shot from Khujand’s Dilshod Bozorov failed to find the target and Alay responded with a tame effort from Emmanuel Yaghr that was saved by goalkeeper Danil Poliakov.
The deadlock was broken in the 27th minute after a mistake from Poliakov who failed to catch Daler Yodgorov’s cross from the left, allowing the ball to fall to Khujand captain Dilshod Bozorov who converted it first-time into the empty net for his second goal of the campaign.
Alay regrouped and had several scoring opportunities in the final 15 minutes of the first half. Moldozhunusov Eldar and Shakhrukh Askarov both tested Suhrobkhuja Yusupov from range, but the Khujand goalkeeper was alert to the threat and ensured his side went into the break with a clean sheet.
Five minutes after the restart, a quick break and a fine solo display of skills from Yodgorov down the left flank saw the youngster deliver a low cross for Abdulmumin Zabirov who swept home Khujand’s second of the night.
Alay continued their pursuit of a goal, with Yaghr and Adilet Nurlan missing the target with headers and goalkeeper Yusupov smothering the Ghanaian forward’s effort late on.
The win means Khujand end the group in second place with four points, while Alay finish bottom of the group with no points from three games.
