Mamelodi Sundowns striker Lelona Daweti has revealed the secret behind her incredible goalscoring start to the CAF Women’s Champions League, Morocco 2022.
Daweti scored a brace to hand the defending champions a winning start to their title defence following a 2-1 win over Nigerian rivals Bayelsa Queens on Monday.
The 23-year-old says her coach, Jerry Tshabalala, is behind her scintillating form, revealing that the Sundowns manager talked her into fixing her goalscoring woes.
“I have been missing a lot of goals in our [South African] league and the coach [Jerry Tshabalala] has been on my neck for the whole season,” Daweti told CAFOnline.com.
“I haven’t been scoring because of the position I’m playing. I promised that if it’s what he is not happy about, I will fix that and I started scoring in her recent few league games.
“My confidence has been boosted and my spirit getting higher since I started scoring. In our last league match before this tournament, I scored four goals and now another two goals. So the confidence is high and it is making the team win.”
Daweti scored eight goals in the last five league games, including a hat-trick in an 8-0 win over First Touch in their last league match before heading out to Morocco, which underscored her fine form in front of goal against Bayelsa.
To cap a superb outing, she bagged the woman-of-the-match prize, but the former Cape Town Roses star insists it was not “because of myself” as she refused to take credit for the award.
“It feels good to be the Woman of the Match and help the team to win,” she reacted.
“I won because of the team’s performance, not because of myself. As long as the team continues to win, I will be happy and this award goes to the team.”
