CAF News: Captain Walid El Karti scored in injury time as Wydad Club Athletic squeezed into the semi-final of the Total CAF Champions League with a 1-0 win on the night in Casablanca on Saturday and a 2-1 aggregate victory over MC Alger.
Wydad will face off with South African side Kaizer Chiefs in the semis. Amakhosi proceeded to the last four despite a 3-0 loss to Tanzania’s Simba in the earlier fixture played in Dar es Salaam.
The game was seemingly headed for a barren draw which would have either way seen Wydad through after the 1-1 result in Algeria last weekend, but El Karti scored to ensure the Moroccans go through with outright victory.
Wydad striker Ayoub El Kaabi will breathe a huge sigh of relief especially after he missed a chunk of the Moroccans’ open chances at goal. The home side bossed possession in the opening half, seeing 68pc of the ball and creating 11 chances, none of which were scored.
El Kaabi had a header from close range go wide while Muaid Ellafi saw a low grasscutter go just wide. El Kaabi had another chance when he calmly controlled Ellafi’s cross from the right on his chest, but his effort on the volley went wide.
Wydad’s number nine had the best chance of the game in the 49th minute when he was sent through on goal by skipper Walid El Karti, but he failed to beat the keeper one on one, placing his left footed shot wide.
With quarter of an hour left, he was picked out with a decent cross from Yahya Idrissi, but his attempt with a volley at the backpost ended up hitting the side netting.
With the game looking towards a draw, skipper El Karti put a foot into Mohamed Ounajem’s cross in the 93rd minute to hand Wydad the win on the night.
