The Africa Cup of Nations returns in January and looks set to leave a number of Premier League clubs in a precarious position.
With as many as 39 players potentially leaving the Premier League, teams are set to be without several key stars at an important point of the season just after the busy festive period.
AFCON players could leave their club sides after the Boxing Day fixtures have been played – meaning that players who advance through to the latter stages of the tournament could now be away from their teams for as long as six weeks – with some players not flying back until the second week of February.
AFCON 2021 will now start on January 9, concluding just under a month later on February 6.
Players will need to leave before or on Boxing Day for quarantining regulations.
The team most affected by this will be Liverpool, who are to be without star forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, as well as central midfielder Naby Keita.
Arsenal meanwhile will also be without three key stars, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicholas Pepe and Thomas Partey all set to join their respective countries.
Here’s a list of all the top-flight players set to take part in the AFCON and miss Premier League action in early 2022.
