Appointed on June 18, 2021, as head coach of the Cameroon women’s team, Gabriel Zabo who knows most of the players in the pennant team, wants to reach the holy grail: win the continental flagship trophy.
Gabriel Zabo is no stranger in the sphere of women’s football. He spent six years as an assistant coach of the U20 women. “I saw scroll before my eyes, more than half of those who make up this team. Since then, I have always been in the den of the Lionesses near or far, “he says.
Active since 2003, coach Zabo is best known for his love of technique, of the beautiful game built to overwhelm his opponents. No wonder he has been nicknamed “El Tactico” in Men’s League circles, where he has worked in 14 clubs.
And his first tactic is to bring together all the breeders who came before him to lead the Indomitable Lionesses. “I plan to do a working session with all those who came before me in this position, in order to extract as much information as possible”, he announces.
The 47-year-old man dreams of lifting the trophy for the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which Cameroon has never achieved. “My ambition is to win! My predecessors have raised the bar to a level where the expectations of all Cameroonians are high. And it is quite legitimate that we cherish the dream of crossing this bar,” he thinks.
Cameroon will face the Central African Republic in the first round of the qualifiers for the TotalEnergies Women’s AFCON scheduled during the FIFA international window from October 18 to 26, 2021. The second round will take place from February 14 to 23, 2022 and the final phase of the tournament will be played from July 2 to 23, 2022 in Morocco. Will it finally be the opportunity for Cameroon to climb on the roof of Africa? The new coach has the answer.
